ARTWORK

Into The Dragon's Lair

LIMITED EDITION PRINT

Here is the third installment of artwork in the five part series of some of The Tank Museums most treasured tanks, painted by world renowned artist Nicholas Trudgian. Inspired by ‘Fury’, the spectacular movie directed by David Ayer and starring Brad Pitt, the painting and limited edition prints have been made with the full cooperation and support of the Director and the film-makers to whom we extend our sincere thanks. The movie features perhaps the rarest collection of genuine World War II vehicles ever seen in a motion picture. This includes the world’s sole surviving operational 'Tiger I’, the primary exhibit of the permanent display at The Bovington Tank Museum.

THE STORY

In the final weeks of the war in Europe, Nazi resistance was as defiant as ever. Far from their expectation of a Third Reich lasting a thousand years they saw the battle rage into the very heart of the German Fatherland. The narrow streets and ancient buildings of picturesque towns became the setting for vicious fighting as Allied armies sought out the last pockets of fanatical resistance. Following an attack by aircraft of the US Ninth Air Force, Sherman tank 'Fury' cautiously picks its way through the wreckage-strewn streets of yet another German town, the crew wary that every corner could be their last.

THE STORY

In April 1945, with battle still raging in the fields of northern Germany, US Army Sherman tank ‘Fury’ and its war-hardened crew advance through the shattered remains of the day’s brutal conflict. Seemingly the sole survivor of a devastating battle and with the fleeting support of Mustangs from the 9th Air Force, ‘Fury’ has its gunsight set even deeper on the defiant heartland of the Third Reich. The crew will not be satisfied until history can be written in their favour.

THE STORY

The wild and remote Tunisian landscape near Djebel Djaffa is the stage for the sudden and thunderous advance of German forces heading towards the British lines. The ground shakes under the weight of Tiger tanks and Panzer IIIs of 3.Zug/1.Kompanie of the schwere Panzer-Abteilung 504. In the air, Bf109Gs of JG77, based at Creteville near Tunis, give welcome support to the armored spearhead. For Tiger 131 this would be its last hours in military service as, during the subsequent battle, it was captured intact by the 48th Royal Tank Regiment. Brought back for evaluation, Tiger 131 became one of only a small number of Tiger tanks to survive the war and is today the only one in full working order anywhere in the world. It has for many years been the most prized exhibit at The Tank Museum, Dorset where the tireless efforts of its custodians have enabled younger generations once more to hear 'the roar of the Tiger' and appreciate the skill and tenacity of the Allied forces that confronted its kind.
